Upper School Honors Piano Trio Presents for Orange County Philharmonic Society

The Upper School Honors Piano Trio represents the most advanced musicians in the orchestra and chamber music program in The Arts at St. Margaret’s. The ensemble includes senior Victoria Lee on piano, junior Brian Lee on violin and sophomore Annika Krafcik on cello. The students recently presented part of their concert program, Felix Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio in D Minor, Op. 49 for members of the Cameo Philharmonic Committee, which fundraises to support music education programs on behalf of the Orange County Philharmonic Society. The Orange County Register has published two glowing reviews of last week’s Upper School play Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.
One review states, “St. Margaret’s presents the gripping drama in a mature fashion, by skillfully acting the difficult material. The winter 2013 Upper School play is Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, an American classic by Tennessee Williams. This Pulitzer Prize-winning play is an emotionally intense drama that sizzles with passion and greed. This drama, directed by Upper School Drama teacher Nathan T. Wheeler, will be in the Hurlbut Theater March 7, 8 and 9 at 7 p.m. and March 9 at 1 p.m. Rated PG-13. Four SMES Freshman Selected for CAIS Honor Band

California Association of Independent Schools’ Ninth Annual Honor Band Festival at Viewpoint School in Calabasas, Calif. was made up of students from St. Margaret’s Episcopal School, Harvard-Westlake School, The Buckley School, La Jolla Country Day School, Viewpoint School, The Webb Schools and The Archer School for Girls. This year, eight students from St. Margaret’s auditioned and four were asked to perform in the Honor Band Festival on Saturday, February 2, which included band, strings orchestra and chorus elements.

10th Annual Coffee House Cabaret Showcases Four Sold-Out Shows in new McGregor Theater

The 10th Annual Coffee House Cabaret, the first housed in the Performing Arts Center’s new McGregor Theater, featured four sold-out shows during the last week in January.
Event Co-Chairs Irene Martino and Sue Shin, with a team of Parent Teacher Fellowship volunteers, transformed the theater into a Parisian cabaret-style show with St. Margaret’s students’ photography adorning black backdrops, red roses and candlelight on each intimate table. Knitting for the Homeless

St. Margaret’s Upper School is known for its academic rigor and as a place where students showcase their talents, abilities, and uniqueness as budding young adults. With the help of some friends, as a sophomore I started a new student organization called Knitting for the Homeless. Alumni Connect with Upper School Students During Second Annual Career Forum

Friday, January 25 marked the second annual Upper School Alumni Career Forum, with 27 St. Margaret’s alumni returning to campus to impart their wisdom on the entire Upper School student body.
Alumni presented during two, 30-minute classroom sessions. They began each session talking about their path from St. Margaret’s through college and onto their current careers. Students were able to connect with alumni from a multitude of backgrounds. An impressive and diverse group of colleges and universities from across the country, including Boston College, Harvard University, New York University, Purdue University, Santa Clara University, Southern Methodist University, Stanford University, Tufts University, University of Michigan and University of Pennsylvania have already accepted a member or members of the St. Margaret’s Class of 2013.

This week, The Capistrano Dispatch profiled senior Harrison White and his commitment to play baseball for Yale University in the fall. Click here to view the article.
