At 5:45 a.m., Saturday, October 29, while most students were still asleep after a long week, 11 students, including me, and three teachers met in front of the Pasternack Field House to set out for the summit of Mt. Baldy (formally named Mt. San Antonio) for the inaugural hike of the newly formed St. Margaret’s Outdoors Club.

Spirits were high and Tartan pride evident at St. Margaret’s Homecoming 2011 on the weekend of October 21-22. Festivities began with the all-school Pep Rally, where the stands were packed with Tartans wearing this year’s red commemorative Homecoming shirt. A typically wacky relay race that pitted the principals and headmaster against the clock and each other, the presentation of Homecoming Court, a rousing performance of the Tartan Marching Band, a series of athletic, energetic cheer squad routines, and a lightning-quick drill by the varsity football team were part of …Read the full story »

It was an historic day at the 45th running of the Orange County Cross Country Championships last Saturday. Senior Billy Gaudreau became the first Tartans runner to win the sweepstakes race and the Boys’ Cross Country team finished fifth regardless of division at the Orange County Championships last Saturday at Irvine Regional Park. St. Margaret’s English Department commended by National Council of Teachers of English
Seniors Heather Hughes and Colin Johnson have each been awarded the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Achievement Award in Writing, a prestigious national writing competition that recognizes outstanding student writers.
Heather and Colin were the only students in Orange County who won this year’s award. Of the 1,649 students nominated by their teachers from the 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Virgin Islands, Canada, and American schools abroad, 520 were selected for the award.

Apple founder Steve Jobs, whose stellar career was not without failure, figured prominently in the October 7 Honors Assembly celebrating 193 students achieving top grades in the spring 2011 semester. St. Margaret’s Upper School students were acknowledged for their academic accomplishments through national merit recognition, Headmaster’s Honors and Honors for last spring’s semester.
Two days before the assembly, Jobs’s death at age 56 was a major news event, inspiring portions of the morning’s discourse about the nature of success and failure.

OC Varsity named senior Billy Gaudreau Cross Country Athlete of the Week for the week of September 19. His time of 14:26 was the fastest among all county runners who competed in the Woodbridge Cross Country Classic and St. Margaret’s ranked third among all county teams that participated.
