A Look at the Class of 2013’s Independent Senior Projects

The 2013 Independent Senior Projects, guided by Co-Directors and Upper School teachers Pam Virk and Peter Clark, came to a close last Friday with seniors presenting their project reflections on Monday to their fellow advisory classmates, advisor, and a selected junior advisory.
The range of ISPs was broad and deep this year with students engaging in projects such as microchip technology at Broadcom, creating a robotic hand from scratch on campus, civic leadership at the Laguna Niguel mayor’s office, environmental stewardship action …

St. Margaret’s Episcopal School will present its senior Class of 2013 for graduation this Saturday recognizing the students’ scholarship, accomplishments and readiness to embark on college and the next level of goals and aspirations.

Senior Mattingly Messina Wins Top Award at the 2013 Orange County CAPPIES Gala

The formal CAPPIES gala, held at The Grove in Anaheim last Sunday, was a climactic end to a highly successful year in the Performing Arts at St. Margaret’s. Senior Mattingly Messina received the CAPPIE Award for Supporting Actor in a Play for his role as Big Daddy Pollit in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

Tartans Place First in Division 2 in California and the Nation in 2013 TEAMS Engineering Competition

A team of eight St. Margaret’s students placed first in Division 2 in California and in the nation, and third overall in California in the 2013 TEAMS (Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science) engineering competition. The team solved complex mathematical problems and provided answers to cyber security questions related to this year’s competition theme: “Engineering A Secure Cyberspace.”
The team, including freshmen Andrew Klement and Grant Russell, and sophomores Greg Justice, Ashley Kang, Annika Krafcik, Lance Lew, Liam McGregor and Ben Wang, prepared in the fall for the one-day TEAMS …

Upper School Students Give Back to Returning Marines through Operation Help a Hero

Last Friday, roughly 30 Upper School students took part in a service project at Camp Pendleton put together by Operation Help a Hero and the leaders of this club at St. Margaret’s, junior Julianna Coleman and senior Olivia Santora. Operation Help a Hero is a non-profit organization that supports local Marines. This particular project involved cleaning the barracks for returning single Marines.

Students Raise Funds to Aid Pacific Marine Mammal Center

From Lower School to Upper School, St. Margaret’s students organized an all-school fundraiser to help the Pacific Marine Mammal Center in Laguna Beach. This year, the center rescued a record-high number of seals. Through the combined efforts of the school, the students raised $6,504.62, which is expected to support 13 seal pups from rescue to release including fish and medication.

2013 Upper School Awards Recognize Exemplary Students

St. Margaret’s Upper School students and faculty assembled in the Marcus D. Hurlbut Theater on May 6 for the 2013 Upper School Awards Ceremony. This ceremony recognizes the exemplary academic work Upper School students have done throughout the school year and honors students for their outstanding work beyond the classroom as well as their contribution to the life of the school.

Three SMES Students Recognized in Prestigious National English Competition

The National Council of Teachers of English has awarded junior Julianna Coleman a Certificate of Superior Writing for the 2013 Achievement Awards in Writing, and grade 8 students Katherine Adelman and Neal Singh Certificates of Recognition for the 2013 Promising Young Writers program. St. Margaret’s English Department was also awarded a certificate of recognition by the NCTE, for “excellence in its instructional program as revealed by its evident contribution to the high quality of writing of one or more of its students honored with NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing.”
