SMES Captures 16 CAPPIES Nominations, including Best Play, Best Musical and Best Critics Team

Early Thursday morning, the Orange County CAPPIES announced the 2012 nominees and commendees for the 2011-2012 theatre season. St. Margaret’s students received 16 nominations for their work on The Servant of Two Masters and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels in performing, design, technical and critical categories.
Fifty-eight theatre productions performed by 32 high schools were eligible for this year’s awards. The Orange County Cappies Critic’s teams select “Critic’s Choices” in all eligible categories. Those Critics’ Choices go on the ballot for voting, which was completed on Tuesday night. The top five become nominees. …

Spring Concert and Dance Recital Demonstrate how the Arts Thrive at St. Margaret’s

Students in all divisions shared their musical and dance repertoires with the larger community in early May. The spring concert season opened with a vocal concert featuring singers from grades 4- 12 performing songs from countries around the world. Choir Directors Mrs. Stacey Miles and Ms. Victoria Burnett and Accompanist Adam Bravo led the 41 Lower School students, 88 grade 6 and 7 students and 32 Upper School students through the evening’s program. The choirs performed an impressive variety of choral selections, including songs performed in German, Portuguese and Latin.

“Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” – A Uniquely Unforgettable Experience

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels all began back in January at auditions. Sitting nervously among my peers, Mr. Wheeler, our director, gave us an overview of his concept for the show as I awaited the start of my last high school audition. Throughout the week, several Upper School students earnestly shared their talent with Mr. Wheeler, Vocal Director Mrs. Miles, Assistant Vocal Director Mrs. Porrazzo, and Choreographer Mrs. Mehling. Sophomore Tiffany Choe will be performing at the Soka Performing Arts Center next Sunday, along with internationally acclaimed Mezzo-Soprano Milena Kitic at the South Orange County School of the Arts (SOCSA) Foundation’s Ninth Annual Opera Celebration. Tiffany has also won the Stars of Tomorrow vocal competition, winning a $1,000 scholarship.
Tiffany has been singing for more than 10 years in venues including the Barklay Theater, Saddleback College and the Performing Arts Center. She has won numerous competitions including VOCE, The Classical Singer Competition, MTAC Competition and Saddleback Concerto Competition.

St. Margaret’s Commemorates Last Coffee House Cabaret in Sillers Hall

The Ninth Annual Coffee House Cabaret was a unique evening as Director of the Arts Darcy Rice reminded the audience that these were the final Coffee House Cabaret performances to be held in Sillers Hall. In the spring of 2013, Coffee House Cabaret will enjoy a new venue – St. Margaret’s Performing Arts Center, which will be completed in late May 2012.

Tickets are on sale now for the Upper School musical Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
Based on the popular 1988 film, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels centers on two con men living in the French Riviera. The first is the suave and sophisticated Lawrence Jameson, who makes his lavish living by talking rich ladies out of their money. The other, a small-time crook named Freddy Benson, more humbly swindles women by waking their compassion with fabricated stories about his grandmother’s failing health. Fourth Annual 24-Hour Playwriting Festival was a Huge Success

The fourth annual 24-Hour Playwriting Festival kicked off Friday, January 20 and ended approximately 24 hours later with performances of 10 plays in front of a packed house in Sillers Hall. The plays, all written Friday evening, were rehearsed and performed within 24 hours. Eighty-five Upper School students were involved, as well as eight adults and one seven year old.

2012 Coffee House Cabaret will have Biggest Line-up in Eight Year History

Thirty-one acts, the largest in the event’s history, will perform at this year’s Coffee House Cabaret on Saturday, March 3.
A record number of students auditioned for a performance spot including 70 acts involving 82 students in Middle and Upper School.

The program will be a balanced representation of both Upper and Middle School performers in the areas of vocal music, instrumental music, dance and spoken word performances. This year’s event will feature three performances at 12:00 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

The Servant of Two Masters: A Student/Cast Member Perspective

The Servant of Two Masters all started at casting. It was fascinating to watch such talent audition, but it was also terrifying competition. As auditions and then call-backs progressed, I was not very confidant I would be cast. I was, after all, only a junior up against some strong seniors. You could imagine my delighted shock when I opened Mr. Wheeler’s email to find my name (next to Katie Kontoulis’s) under the role of Beatrice.
