Karen Ahn Repeats Win at SMES Middle School Math Counts Competition

For the second year in a row, grade 8 student Karen Ahn took top honors at the St. Margaret’s Middle School Math Counts Competition on January 11. Seventh grader Sarah Ko was awarded second place and one of St. Margaret’s grade 7 exchange students, Peter Shen was awarded third place.

Statistics Unit Teaches Students the Power of Data Manipulation

Once again, students in Mrs. Stephanie Windes’ algebra class took part in a unit on statistics where they learned how data can be manipulated to prove whatever they want it to prove. Students examined data from different perspectives before using their newly-developed, graph-making skills to sell products that they created.

SMES Math Teams are Triumphant in Math Competition

Building and designing carousels, a Rubik’s Cube© challenge and a mental math challenge…these were just a few of the Math Field Day events that three St. Margaret’s math teams competed in last Saturday at Capistrano Valley High School.
Sponsored by the Orange County Math Council, Math Field Day is a math competition for students in Grades 4, 5 and 6. Middle School Students Excel at Math Counts Regional Competition

Six students from St. Margaret’s Middle School competed in the University of California, Irvine MATHCOUNTS® Regional Competition last month. This year, two teams composed of the following students showed their competitive spirit during the competition: Karen Ahn, Grade 7; Aaron Garfinkle, Grade 6; Jack Li, Grade 7; Megan Phansalkar, grade 8; Alice Ra, grade 6; Tamara Tsubota, grade 8.

Grade 7 Student Karen Ahn Took Top Honors at St. Margaret’s Middle School Math Bee

Twelve Middle School students participated in St. Margaret’s Math Counts competition in the Campaigne Center on January 6. Sponsored by the Math Counts Program, this was the first round of the school-level competition.
Middle School math teacher Stephanie Windes presented Karen with the official trophy and prize: a $50 iTunes gift certificate. Second place winner, grade 7 student Jack Li was awarded a $25 gift certificate, and, third place winner, grade 8 student Noah Choi, was awarded a $15 gift certificate.

St. Margaret’s JETS Team Takes First Place at Competition

Eight St Margaret’s students traveled to University of Southern California on Saturday to compete in the 2011 Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS). The students finished as the top team in their school level division and took first place over all teams competing at USC, regardless of size. A follow-up showed that this year’s team also took first place in Division 2 for all of California, which included schools competing at Stanford University on the same day. The team consisted …

Johnny Li’s Cancer Research Profiled in OC Register

St. Margaret’s senior Johnny Li was profiled in The Orange County Register this week and on KCBS TV Channel 2 for his work at University of California, Irvine applying math to researching motion and growth of cancer cells. St. Margaret’s Represented at Mathcounts Regional Competition

On February 21, a team of St. Margaret’s students competed in the Orange County Chapter Competition of Mathcounts, held at the University of California, Irvine. Our team of three included David Freed, grade 8; Derek Hoare, grade 8; and Brian Lee, grade 7.
The team members qualified to represent St. Margaret’s during a competition held last December, and they prepared for Mathcounts during weekly math club meetings held at lunchtime.
There were 131 participants in the competition, but St. Margaret’s was one of only three private schools …
