Breakthrough SJC and Founding Director Featured in OC Register

The Orange County Register education writer Scott Martindale visited St. Margaret’s Breakthrough SJC program over the summer to learn more about this program that helps to prepare high-potential, low-income middle school students from San Juan Capistrano for the rigors of college-track academics in high school. Breakthrough provides a rigorous academic enrichment program in an intensive, six-week summer program on St. Margaret’s campus to middle school students. The visible progress of construction on the Performing Arts Center is creating lots of buzz in our local San Juan community. San Juan Capistrano Patch education writer Penny Arevalo visited campus this week to meet with Headmaster Marcus Hurlbut, Director of Operations and Finance David Bush and Director of the Arts Darcy Rice to learn about the project, tour the site and write a feature story on construction progress and the plans for the future use of the space for performing arts. Breakthrough College Bound Students Excel at CUSD Math Exam

On August 4, approximately 11 of the Breakthrough College Bound students (formally the High School Transition Program) joined other students from across Capistrano Unified School District to take an exam that could potentially allow them to bypass Algebra IB and enter straight into geometry as freshman. These 11 students were among 25 Breakthrough College Bound students who spent six weeks of their summer preparing for high school in Breakthrough’s College Bound program.
