OC Register Selects Meaghan Hurr as 2012 Graduate who will Change the World

The Orange County Register has selected 10 2012 graduates who will change the world.
More than 110 public and private Orange County high schools were invited to nominate at least one graduate whom they believed would change the world. St. Margaret’s Meaghan Hurr was selected from a pool of more than 40 applicants.

Top St. Margaret’s 2012 Graduates Honored in OC Register

Orange County’s graduation season is in high gear. To help mark St. Margaret’s students’ accomplishments, The Orange County Register has honored the school’s top four graduates – Ted Ko for academics, Billy Gaudreau for athletics, Saba Saghafi for arts, and Gabrielle Carpenter for community service.

SMES 2012 Graduating Class Basking in Its Tartan Family at 27th Commencement

The Class of 2012, the largest in St. Margaret’s 33-year history, graduated on Saturday among its close-knit community of family and friends. The class of 108 students will go on to 70 colleges and universities in 25 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, France and Scotland in the fall, but on Saturday they embraced the school of the Tartan and the Cross one last time before embarking on new adventures.

St. Margaret’s Episcopal School is pleased to present the graduating Class of 2012. Each of these 108 new Tartan alumni has earned admission to a four-year college or university. In total, the Class of 2012 received 509 acceptance letters from more than 180 colleges and universities around the world, providing them unbounded opportunity for their futures and tough choices to make.

On May 25, St. Margaret’s Upper School students and faculty gathered in the Pasternack Field House for the 2012 Upper School Awards Ceremony. This ceremony recognizes the exemplary academic work Upper School students have done throughout the school year and honors students for their outstanding work beyond the classroom as well as their contribution to the life of the school.

Seniors Colin Johnson and Madison Gottlieb have joined the Preschool this week as part of their Independent Senior Projects (ISP). Both writers, the students are investigating the emergence of writing skills in the preschool child.

U.S. Ambassador Discusses African Conflict with Upper School Students

Introduced by senior Monika Laird, former U.S. Ambassador to Sierra Leone Thomas Hull gave a highly informative and engaging lecture last Thursday to Upper School students about the background of African conflict. This context is needed, he explained, to fully grasp why so many African countries face internal divisions, tribal strife, and, in many cases, civil war.

St. Margaret’s senior Ted Ko is quoted in The Harvard Crimson regarding “Stories from the Early Action Class of 2016.” Out of 4,231 applicants, Ted was one of 772 accepted to Harvard under the newly reinstated early action program, and one of four students quoted in the article.

SMES Seniors Govern at Harvard Model Congress San Francisco

Eleven St. Margaret’s seniors attended Harvard Model Congress in San Francisco last month. The simulation was an opportunity for students to learn firsthand about the workings of the United States Congress, the National Security Council, the Cabinet, Press Corps and the Supreme Court. At the conference, students participated in a number of committees that simulated various components of the American government.
