Johnny Li Named 2011 Intel Science Talent Search Finalist

On Wednesday, St. Margaret’s senior Johnny Li was named one of 40 high school seniors from across the U.S. selected as a finalist in the country’s oldest and most prestigious pre-college science competition, the Intel Science Talent Search. All 40 finalists will gather in Washington, D.C. from March 10-15 to compete for $630,000 in awards. The top winner will receive $100,000 from the Intel Foundation.
In addition to being named a finalist for his project titled, “Effects of Cell Compressibility, Motility and Contact Inhibition on the Growth of Tumor Cell Clusters,” …

Tartans Make Lasting Impression at Harvard Model Congress

On Friday, January 14, 10 St. Margaret’s students and faculty advisor Rocky Parker departed to San Francisco to participate in a four-day congressional simulation sponsored by Harvard University.
Harvard Model Congress is the oldest and largest congressional simulation conference in the world, providing high school students from across the U.S. and abroad with an opportunity to experience American government through role-play and simulation. By engaging in open debates, caucuses, trials, press conferences and testimonies, students are able to develop a better understanding of civic involvement and government function.

SMES Science Students Participate in UCI Summer Internship

Since 2005, The Henry Samueli School of Engineering at the University of California, Irvine Engineering Department, in collaboration with St. Margaret’s Episcopal School, has extended to science students at St. Margaret’s a unique opportunity for summer enrichment through a research internship program. St. Margaret’s Students Honored with National AP Scholar Awards

St. Margaret’s offers its students 24 Advanced Placement courses ranging from core academic disciplines to music and art. Students’ scores on the culminating AP exams each spring illustrate the exceptional instruction and strength of the St. Margaret’s student body with recent pass rates between 88 and 90 percent (the 2010 national AP exam average pass rate was 57 percent).

SMES Students Win Prestigious National Writing Competition

Seniors Victoria Davidson and Natalie Hiles have each been awarded the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Achievement Award in Writing, a prestigious national writing competition that publicly recognizes some of the best student writers in the nation.

SMES Students Named National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholars

Selected from a pool of more than 200,000 students from the United States, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, Mariana Islands and Marshall Islands, as well as U.S. citizens attending schools abroad, seniors Melissa Bond and Felipe Soto have been recognized as 2010-2011 National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholars.
This year, the National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) recognized nearly 5,000 outstanding Hispanic/Latino students. Jonathan Li Represents SMES in Nation’s Premier High School Science Competition

On October 22, Jonathan Li was announced as a semifinalist in the prestigious 2010-2011 Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology, the nation’s premier science research competition for high school students.
The Siemens Foundation announced the semifinalists and regional finalists of the competition, revealing the brightest high school minds in contention for the nation’s most coveted teen science prize. The Siemens Competition is administered annually by the College Board, and awards college scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $100,000 in individual and team categories. Peace, Love and a Tartan Homecoming to Remember

Tartans celebrated peace and love at the 2010 Homecoming. The festivities on Friday and throughout the preceding week were full of school spirit and fun-filled celebrations. From the all-school Pep Rally, in which many donned this year’s commemorative Homecoming shirt, to the presentation of Homecoming Court, the second performance of the new Tartan Marching Band and the victorious Friday night football game against Firebaugh High School, sprits were high and Tartan pride was in full affect.

Upper School Students Acknowledged at Honors Assembly

On Friday, October 8, 190 St. Margaret’s Upper School students were acknowledged and celebrated for their academic accomplishments through national merit recognition, Headmaster’s Honors and Honors for the spring 2010 semester.
Students on the Honor Roll earned a spring semester GPA of 3.5 to 3.74, and students on the Headmaster’s Honor Roll earned a spring semester GPA of 3.75 or higher. For a full list of honorees, click here to read the Honors Assembly program.

Johnny Li’s Cancer Research Profiled in OC Register

St. Margaret’s senior Johnny Li was profiled in The Orange County Register this week and on KCBS TV Channel 2 for his work at University of California, Irvine applying math to researching motion and growth of cancer cells.
