St. Margaret’s Theatre Students Recognized with 15 M.A.C.Y. Awards

On Sunday, St. Margaret’s theatre students and their families participated in the 41st Annual Childress M.A.C.Y. Awards, held at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts.
St. Margaret’s students were honored with 15 awards for their work on Jane Eyre, including the Literature Brought to Life Award acknowledging the entire cast, crew and design team of the production.

Johnny Li Named CA State Science Fair Student of the Year and Qualifies for 2011 U.S. Physics Team

Last week, the American Association of Physics Teachers announced that senior Johnny Li has qualified to compete in the International Physics Olympiad as a member of the U.S. Physics Team. This is Johnny’s second year qualifying for the U.S. Physics Team.
Last January, approximately 3,600 students participated in the Fnet=ma exam for a chance to qualify for the 2011 U.S. Physics Team. Out of the 3,600 students, 20 qualified for the team. These students are in the process of training for the mentally grueling exams and lab tests that they will …

On Thursday, April 14, seven juniors and 12 seniors were inducted into the Cum Laude Society, an international honors organization for which only a small percentage of high school juniors and seniors are qualified.

Cum Laude Society Inducts 19 St. Margaret’s Students

Last Thursday, seven juniors and 12 seniors were inducted into the Cum Laude Society, an international honors organization for which only a small percentage of high school juniors and seniors are qualified. To be eligible, juniors must rank in the top 10 percent of their class, and seniors must rank in the top 20 percent of their class. In addition, each inductee must be approved by the Cum Laude committee, consisting of school faculty and administrators who evaluate whether they strive for perfection in their coursework and set high academic …

Senior Mitchell Pok Named Boys Lacrosse Athlete of the Week

On Tuesday, Mitchell Pok was named Athlete of the Week by The Orange County Register. Mitchell has a 4.3 GPA and has been a three-sport standout in football, soccer and lacrosse.
Mitchell, a three-year starter on attack, “epitomizes the notion of being a student athlete at St. Margaret’s,” said St. Margaret’s Assistant Coach Bryan Harney.

Students Honored for Achievements During Fall Semester

Last week, St. Margaret’s Upper School assembled to congratulate those students who received Honors or Headmaster’s Honors for the fall semester.
In his remarks, Headmaster Marcus D. Hurlbut acknowledged the students for their academic achievements, the core of St. Margaret’s. “These students are purposeful, earnest and dedicated,” he commented. He asked the Class of 2011 and all of St. Margaret’s students to cherish every moment of their high school experience and know that “we learn much more from you then you do from us.”

Intel Science Talent Search Finalist Johnny Li Visits the White House

President Barack Obama talked with the 2011 Intel Science Talent Search finalists in the East Room of the White House on Tuesday. Senior Johnny Li was among the 40 high school finalists who have been in Washington, D.C. since last Thursday.
While in D.C., Johnny, along with the other finalists, had the opportunity to meet with scientists and publicly display his work titled, “Effects of Cell Compressibility, Motility and Contact Inhibition on the Growth of Tumor Cell Clusters.”

The Orange County chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame honored 62 football players from around Orange County last Monday, including 26 from South Orange County schools. St. Margaret’s seniors Bryan Flores, Mitchell Pok and Brennan Smith were honored for their outstanding academic performance.

Two seniors with leading athletic and academic records, Hannah Hess and Colin Shaffer, will serve for the first time as Jr. Dignitaries for the 2011 Swallows Day Parade. Hannah, Miss Fiesta, and Colin, Jr. Senor San Juan, will represent the Fiesta Association and St. Margaret’s School at the 53rd Swallows Day Parade in downtown San Juan Capistrano on Saturday, March 26.

Johnny Li Named Statewide Winner of the 2010 Siemens Awards for Advanced Placement

Senior Johnny Li was recently named one of two statewide winners of the 2010 Siemens Awards for Advanced Placement, which honors high school students who receive a perfect score on up to eight of the most rigorous Advanced Placement math and science exams offered to students.
The Orange County Register recognized Johnny for his recent accomplishment and his perfect score of 5 on all eight of the qualifying AP exams.
