Dear St. Margaret’s Community,
Here at Breakthrough SJC we are busy planning our upcoming summer! Breakthrough has a unique mission in that it not only serves highly motivated, low-income students on their path to college but also inspires excellent high school and college students to pursue careers in education. Our “students serving students” model allows us to provide our middle school students with positive, hardworking college-aged mentors.

Breakthrough SJC has been a passion for a number of St. Margaret’s families and faculty/staff members since its inception in the summer of 2006. The mission and purpose of this national organization and the impact it is having in our local community are reasons many families stay actively involved as host families for the program.

Breakthrough San Juan Capistrano Celebrates Successful Seventh Summer

Breakthrough San Juan Capistrano celebrated in fashion and folklore on Saturday, August 4 the culmination of six weeks of intense academic instruction, which began on June 25. This seventh summer of the Breakthrough SJC program, housed 80 highly motivated middle school students for 29 program days. The students received instruction in English, math, science, social science and academic electives to prepare them for school courses this fall. Yesenia Garcia, a member of Breakthrough San Juan Capistrano’s second class, has been named Capistrano Valley’s Youth of the Year by the Boys and Girls Club. According to club leaders, she was chosen for her leadership skills and commitment to community service.
As a rising grade 7 student in 2007, Garcia joined Breakthrough SJC, an academic program that supports underserved students as they work towards their goal of being first-generation college students. Garcia has been highly involved with the program since 2007, serving both as a volunteer and a teaching assistant.

Breakthrough SJC and Founding Director Featured in OC Register

The Orange County Register education writer Scott Martindale visited St. Margaret’s Breakthrough SJC program over the summer to learn more about this program that helps to prepare high-potential, low-income middle school students from San Juan Capistrano for the rigors of college-track academics in high school. Breakthrough provides a rigorous academic enrichment program in an intensive, six-week summer program on St. Margaret’s campus to middle school students.
