2012 Coffee House Cabaret will have Biggest Line-up in Eight Year History

Thirty-one acts, the largest in the event’s history, will perform at this year’s Coffee House Cabaret on Saturday, March 3.
A record number of students auditioned for a performance spot including 70 acts involving 82 students in Middle and Upper School.

The program will be a balanced representation of both Upper and Middle School performers in the areas of vocal music, instrumental music, dance and spoken word performances. This year’s event will feature three performances at 12:00 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Victoria Burnett to Perform at UCI’s “An Evening of Spirituals” Honoring Martin Luther King Jr.

Saturday, January 14, 8 p.m. Location: UCI’s Winifred Smith Hall
St. Margaret’s Artist in Residence and Choral Music Teacher Victoria Burnett will be in concert with Dr. Darryl Taylor, world-renowned counter-tenor and professor at University of California, Irvine’s Winifred Smith Hall on January 14 at 8 p.m. The program will include African-American spirituals sung by both Dr. Taylor and Ms. Burnett. In additional, Master Storyteller Ms. Burnett will weave her original tales and African-American historical tales of the Diaspora throughout the concert. The students have combined their creative minds to make a plethora of individually-crafted pieces made for the sole purpose of raising money to benefit the people harmed in natural causes, such as Hurricane Irene.

Middle Schoolers Make Seussical Jr. a Creative Tour de Force

A colorful, feather-filled, tuneful smash hit: that was the 2011 Middle School musical production of Seussical Jr.
The students in grades 6-8 rose to the considerable challenge of putting on this whimsical yet complex, 75-minute show-–and astonished everyone who saw it. From the lead actors to the ensemble cast to the backstage techs, the students of Seussical Jr. exemplified leadership, talent and professionalism as they honed their particular skills.
Student interest in the Middle School production was so great that it was double cast, featuring 87 students and a full student technical crew. …

Performing Arts Center Featured in The Orange County Register

St. Margaret’s new Performing Art Center continues to receive widespread interest from the local community. The Orange County Register reporter David Bro stopped by St. Margaret’s campus this week to tour the Performing Arts Center construction site and to sit down with Headmaster Marcus D. Hurlbut, Director of the Arts Darcy Rice, and Director of Finance and Operations David Bush to learn about the facility, the school’s plans for its use and how the arts are a critical part of the liberal arts education at St. Margaret’s Episcopal School.

Talented Tartan Tellers Tell Tales at OC Children’s Book Festival

Five Tartan storytellers took the stage before the crowd at the eighth annual Orange County Children’s Book Festival on Sunday, Oct. 2 at Orange Coast College, where more than 40,000 children, teens and adults turned out to celebrate the written and spoken word. St. Margaret’s Artist-in-Residence Victoria Burnett, a renowned national storyteller and poet, was invited to perform at the festival. Open to all students in all grades, St. Margaret’s is seeking original artwork for consideration for the 2011 St. Margaret’s Christmas Card.
The challenge: create a Christmas-themed piece of artwork to be used in the 2011 St. Margaret’s Christmas Card. Students are encouraged to think about the St. Margaret’s campus, icons or imagery, and tie in your Christmas theme in elements of the St. Margaret’s Community—buildings, iconic images, students, school activities, etc. All artwork media will be accepted and considered: drawing, painting, illustration, photography, montage, collage, mosaic.

The visible progress of construction on the Performing Arts Center is creating lots of buzz in our local San Juan community. San Juan Capistrano Patch education writer Penny Arevalo visited campus this week to meet with Headmaster Marcus Hurlbut, Director of Operations and Finance David Bush and Director of the Arts Darcy Rice to learn about the project, tour the site and write a feature story on construction progress and the plans for the future use of the space for performing arts.
