Spring Concert and Dance Recital Demonstrate how the Arts Thrive at St. Margaret’s

Students in all divisions shared their musical and dance repertoires with the larger community in early May. The spring concert season opened with a vocal concert featuring singers from grades 4- 12 performing songs from countries around the world. Choir Directors Mrs. Stacey Miles and Ms. Victoria Burnett and Accompanist Adam Bravo led the 41 Lower School students, 88 grade 6 and 7 students and 32 Upper School students through the evening’s program. The choirs performed an impressive variety of choral selections, including songs performed in German, Portuguese and Latin.

Preschool Students Enjoy Cultural Arts Presentation by Swazzle

Preschool students gathered in Sillers Hall last Friday to enjoy a Cultural Arts presentation featuring lively entertainment with puppets, music, storytelling, two languages and yes, learning. Segerstrom Center for the Arts, through their ArtsTeach program, presented Swazzle, a puppet company started by twin brothers Sean and Patrick Johnson when they were in middle school. They build their own puppets and have performed thousands of puppet shows across California. They have worked with organizations like Disney and the Jim Henson Company and on Friday morning …

SMES Student Designs Entered in Vans Custom Culture Art Competition

In early April, 27 St. Margaret’s students from studio art classes in the Upper School embarked upon a creative process to design imagery that would adorn various styles of Vans footwear. After registering for the Vans Custom Culture art program competition, Vans sent St. Margaret’s four pairs of shoes – one high top, two lace ups and one pair of slip ons. Artwork from Nine SMES Students on Display at Local Gallery

Artwork from nine St. Margaret’s students will be on display at the upcoming Huntington Beach Art Center Photography and Multi-Media Show. Artwork from two of the nine students will also be displayed in the Junior Art Exhibit this summer at The Festival of Arts of Laguna Beach.
Students entered their work in Imagination Celebration, an annual county-wide art festival celebrating creativity for all children and their families. The art festival is sponsored by Arts Orange County and the Orange County Department of Education. Student artwork was juried by artists and educators.

Sitting nervously among my peers, Mr. Wheeler, our director, gave us an overview of his concept for the show as I awaited the start of my last high school audition. PTF Cultural Arts Sponsors All-School Assembly Featuring the Hutchins Consort

Students in Lower, Middle and Upper School gathered in Pasternack Field House last Friday for an instrumental music concert by the eight-member Hutchins Consort.
The Hutchins Consort played on eight scaled violins of a violin octet designed and built by Dr. Carleen Hutchins. With instruments ranging from the tiny treble violin, tuned one octave above the standard violin, to the gigantic large bass violin, tuned one octave lower than a cello, the Hutchins Consort produced an astonishing pallet of sounds.

SMES Students Honored at Color it Orange

Twenty-four St. Margaret’s students were honored this year at Color it Orange, a county wide annual juried youth art exhibition at Laguna College of Art + Design. Their pieces were showcased at the studios and galleries of Laguna College of Art + Design during the exhibit’s opening reception earlier this month.
Some 800 pieces were selected from more than 4,500 juried entries in genres including drawing, painting, sculpture, print and photography. This year’s judges included Laguna College of Art + Design alumna Elizabeth McGhee, Julita Jones of Community Art Project and …

Fourth Annual 24-Hour Playwriting Festival was a Huge Success

The fourth annual 24-Hour Playwriting Festival kicked off Friday, January 20 and ended approximately 24 hours later with performances of 10 plays in front of a packed house in Sillers Hall. The plays, all written Friday evening, were rehearsed and performed within 24 hours. Eighty-five Upper School students were involved, as well as eight adults and one seven year old.
