Tartans Win 69 Awards from Country’s Most Prestigious Visual Arts Competition

California region jurors for the 90th Annual Scholastic Art Competition, the country’s most prestigious visual arts competition for young artists, have awarded 69 state-level Gold Key, Silver Key, and honorable mention awards to 35 St. Margaret’s artists, grades 8-12. Students submitted 147 entries in the categories of drawing, ceramics, sculpture, digital art and photography.
The 21 works by St. Margaret’s 10 Gold Key recipients will now advance for national jurying for possible inclusion in Scholastic’s annual national exhibition, “Art, Write, Now” and recognition at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The …

10th Annual Coffee House Cabaret Showcases Four Sold-Out Shows in new McGregor Theater

The 10th Annual Coffee House Cabaret, the first housed in the Performing Arts Center’s new McGregor Theater, featured four sold-out shows during the last week in January.
Event Co-Chairs Irene Martino and Sue Shin, with a team of Parent Teacher Fellowship volunteers, transformed the theater into a Parisian cabaret-style show with St. Margaret’s students’ photography adorning black backdrops, red roses and candlelight on each intimate table. Students Take Photos with Quaker Oats Can and go to the Darkroom to Develop

Ten advanced photography students connected with J Serra’s advanced photography class so that they could assist St. Margaret’s students in their first ever darkroom experience. Students constructed a pinhole camera from a Quaker Oats can and used their pinholes to take a rudimentary image and then develop the image which rendered as a negative

St. Margaret’s students have won numerous critics and performance awards in the last 10 years! Create a Christmas-themed piece of artwork to be used in the 2012 St. Margaret’s Christmas Card. Hurlbut Theater Curtain Rose to a Sold-Out Crowd for its Inaugural Student Performance

A long-awaited moment in the history of the school took place last Friday as the curtain rose for the inaugural opening night performance in the Marcus D. Hurlbut Theater of the Performing Arts Center. Seventy-three students from three divisions of the school performed The Sound of Music to a sold-out crowd of 450 officially opening a new era of performing arts at St. Margaret’s.
