St. Margaret’s Inaugural Summer Piano Festival Draws Musicians from Around the World

Fifty students from around the world, and as far away as China, came to San Juan Capistrano and St. Margaret’s to participate in the inaugural Southern California Music Institute Piano Festival held June 21-30 in the new Performing Arts Center.
The Festival accommodated students at every level by offering two sessions: the Academy and the Camp. This year’s Academy session involved 30 students, including six boarding students who came to San Juan Capistrano from China, Mexico, San Francisco, Ohio and New York and was tailored towards students interested in advanced piano …

“The Sound of Music” Wins Top Honors at M.A.C.Y. Awards Ceremony

At Saturday’s 43rd Annual Childress M.A.C.Y. Awards Ceremony, St. Margaret’s students received praise and honors for our musical, The Sound of Music. We brought home a trophy for a highest honor for the work of the Nun Chorus Ensemble, and we had many cast members recognized as well.
Junior Tiffany Choe (Mother Abbess) and sophomore Morgan Higgins (Maria Rainer) received trophies for Outstanding Achievement.

The 2013 Upper School play, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, has been nominated as Best Play for the 2013 Orange County CAPPIES for the 2012-2013 theater season! In addition, individual nominations for the play include: Lead Actor in a Play, Brooks Robinson as Brick Pollit, Lead Actress in a Play, Delanie Melbon as Maggie Pollit, Supporting Actor in a Play, Mattingly Messina as Big Daddy and for Technical Lighting, Maddie Bidmead.

Spring Concerts Fill the Performing Arts Center with Music

Tartans Honored at Color It Orange Art Exhibit

Thirty St. Margaret’s students were honored this year at Color It Orange, a county wide annual juried youth art exhibition at Laguna College of Art + Design. Their pieces were on display at the studios and galleries of Laguna College of Art + Design from March 17-24.
This year, for the first time, Color It Orange was limited to only high school students. More than 50 county art teachers took part in the exhibition including St. Margaret’s Upper School art teachers Josh Friedman, Karen Poffenberger and Barbara Nelson. Each teacher selected …

A group of St. Margaret’s Upper School performing arts students represented the school at the City of San Juan Capistrano State of the City event with a set of musical performances that garnered standing ovations from the sold-out audience of local government, business and community leaders.

SMES Artists Recognized in Scholastic’s Exhibition and in an Upcoming Ceremony at Carnegie Hall

Scholastic announced the national gold and silver medal winners in the 90th Art & Writing Awards competition on March 15. There were 230,000 works of art and writing by students in grades 7-12 entered into this year’s competition. Only the top one percent of entries garnered 1,900 national medals. St. Margaret’s Episcopal School junior Liam Lasting is amongst this select group of national medal winners and will be recognized at the world-famous Carnegie Hall in New York City on May 31. Upper School Honors Piano Trio Presents for Orange County Philharmonic Society

The Upper School Honors Piano Trio represents the most advanced musicians in the orchestra and chamber music program in The Arts at St. Margaret’s. The ensemble includes senior Victoria Lee on piano, junior Brian Lee on violin and sophomore Annika Krafcik on cello.
