2013 Upper School Awards Recognize Exemplary Students

St. Margaret’s Upper School students and faculty assembled in the Marcus D. Hurlbut Theater on May 6 for the 2013 Upper School Awards Ceremony. This ceremony recognizes the exemplary academic work Upper School students have done throughout the school year and honors students for their outstanding work beyond the classroom as well as their contribution to the life of the school.

SMES Inducts 22 into the Cum Laude Society

This year, 10 juniors and 12 seniors, who joined the nine current seniors inducted in 2012 as juniors, were instated into the Cum Laude Society, an international honors organization for which only a small percentage of high school juniors and seniors are qualified. These 22 students are now part of a longstanding tradition of academic honors that includes more than 300 St. Margaret’s inductees. Students Celebrate National Election Process with Formal Debate

Students in grades 5-12 celebrated our national election process today through a formal debate. Director of Library and Media Center Darla Magana moderated a debate for the Upper School and a separate debate for the Middle School and grade 5 students. During the debates each political party had the opportunity to respond to a question on fiscal policy, foreign policy and rising higher education costs. National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists Awarded

Seniors Victoria Lee, Melisa Osborne, Laura Pusey and James Yorke have been named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Laura Pusey was also named a National Hispanic Scholar Finalist. During the September 28 Honors Assembly in which these students were honored, more than 150 Upper School students were awarded Headmaster’s Honors and more than 60 Upper School students were added to the Honor Roll.
The National Merit Scholarship Competition uses PSAT/NMSQT selection index scores (the sum of critical reading, mathematics, and writing skills scores) to determine participants who qualify for …

Model United Nations Club Starts Year with Record Number of Students

Some 45 Model United Nations students and club officers gathered on October 8 for the first St. Margaret’s Episcopal School MUN Conference. Upper School Principal Tony Jordan introduced Keynote Speaker and St. Margaret’s new Academic Dean Dr. Jeneen Graham whose remarks focused on a short history of the United Nations and how the skill sets learned during Model United Nations are an integral part of the 21st century learning paradigm.

OCVarsity.com Announces Senior Robert Deng Selected as AJGA Academic All American

On Wednesday, the American Junior Golf Association selected St. Margaret’s senior Robert Deng as a member of the 2012 HP Scholastic Junior All-America Team.
According to AJGA, the team consists of “24 of the nation’s brightest minds and best junior golfers;” “12 young men and 12 young women who demonstrate the ability to excel both on the golf course and in the classroom.”
Robert won his first AJGA tournament this summer when he topped the leader board at the Deutsche Bank Partners for Charity Junior Shoot Out. He also tied for fifth …

This year, nine juniors and 13 seniors were inducted into the Cum Laude Society, an international honors organization for which only a small percentage of high school juniors and seniors are qualified. To be eligible, juniors must rank in the top 10 percent of their class, and seniors must rank in the top 20 percent of their class.
