St. Margaret’s senior Ted Ko is quoted in The Harvard Crimson regarding “Stories from the Early Action Class of 2016.” Out of 4,231 applicants, Ted was one of 772 accepted to Harvard under the newly reinstated early action program, and one of four students quoted in the article.

SMES Alumnus Publishes “My Grandfather’s War”

Class of 2004 alumnus Jesse Cozean just published My Grandfather’s War, a two-year project in which he unearthed his grandfather’s experiences as a World War II POW while building a close bond they had never had.
Jesse’s grandfather Robert Cozean was 22 when he entered World War II in 1943. He was captured by the Germans during the Battle of the Bulge in 1944 and finally released in April 1945.
The book is currently available on Amazon.com and in Southern California bookstores.

Sophomore Tiffany Choe will be performing at the Soka Performing Arts Center next Sunday, along with internationally acclaimed Mezzo-Soprano Milena Kitic at the South Orange County School of the Arts (SOCSA) Foundation’s Ninth Annual Opera Celebration. Tiffany has also won the Stars of Tomorrow vocal competition, winning a $1,000 scholarship.
Tiffany has been singing for more than 10 years in venues including the Barklay Theater, Saddleback College and the Performing Arts Center. She has won numerous competitions including VOCE, The Classical Singer Competition, MTAC Competition and Saddleback Concerto Competition.

Named one of Orange County’s top multisport athletes by OCVaristy.com, junior Regan Anderson helped St. Margaret’s girls’ soccer team win the CIF-SS Division 6 title last season (scoring a goal in the title match) and has contributed five goals and three assists this season. She also helped the girls’ lacrosse team win the U.S. Lacrosse Division 2 Southern Section title last spring, scoring five goals in the championship match.

Yesenia Garcia, a member of Breakthrough San Juan Capistrano’s second class, has been named Capistrano Valley’s Youth of the Year by the Boys and Girls Club. According to club leaders, she was chosen for her leadership skills and commitment to community service.
As a rising grade 7 student in 2007, Garcia joined Breakthrough SJC, an academic program that supports underserved students as they work towards their goal of being first-generation college students. Garcia has been highly involved with the program since 2007, serving both as a volunteer and a teaching assistant.

Grade 7 Students Present Case to SC City Council for Better Anti-pollution Curb Signs

Six grade 7 students from St. Margaret’s presented their case for better anti-pollution curb signs to San Clemente City Council members last week as part of the student’s QuikSCience Challenge project, a competition co-sponsored by Quicksilver and University of Sothern California.
After the meeting, the student’s returned to class and began crafting a plan of action to propose new San Clemente curb stencils, including a possible art contest. Additionally, the students are coming up with a robotic system to filter out oil in the ocean from oil spills.

Senior Billy Gaudreau, who was fifth in last week’s West Regional qualifier, finished Saturday’s Footlocker Cross Country Nationals 3.1 mile race in 34th place in a time of 16:07.

Additionally, St. Margaret’s boys’ cross country team finished its season unbeaten and Billy Guadreau posted a course record time of 15:27 in the state finals.
Billy and the Tartans earned their second straight CIF State titles at Woodward Park in Fresno earlier this month. St. Margaret’s has been ranked No. 1 in the state in Division 5 …

Students from St. Margaret’s Episcopal School made more than 700 cards, bags of candy and collected DVDs to send in care packages to military personnel overseas through the organization Military Angels.
“It is so heartwarming to see the kids put so much work and thought into expressing appreciation for our military,” organizer Denise Goodson of Rancho Santa Margarita said.
