Contribute to the Breakthrough SJC Program – Host an Intern Teacher

Dear St. Margaret’s Community,

Here at Breakthrough SJC we are busy planning our upcoming summer! Breakthrough has a unique mission in that it not only serves highly motivated, low-income students on their path to college but also inspires excellent high school and college students to pursue careers in education. Our “students serving students” model allows us to provide our middle school students with positive, hardworking college-aged mentors.

This summer, we will have intern teachers from all over the country that need a home. These teachers are currently attending colleges such as Pomona, Yale, Columbia, Cornell and the University of Alabama. Across Breakthrough Collaborative, 65 percent of intern teachers hold leadership positions in their colleges, they have an average 3.5 GPA, they study a variety of majors (most are not education majors) and the Breakthrough internship itself only has a 35 percent acceptance rate.

Any high school students would greatly benefit from having a college mentor who is excelling and has gone through the college process themselves. If you have any students in your home, specifically students who will undergo the college process soon, please consider hosting one of our Breakthrough teachers this summer. Hosting is a great way to not only contribute to the Breakthrough SJC program but to also inform your students with a great first-hand account of the application process, college life, and different colleges and fields of study.

Please keep in mind that you don’t need to be home all summer to host a teacher. In fact, our teachers often feed pets, water plants, take care of the trash, etc. while you are away. And, other than dinner, most of their meals, as well as their transportation are taken care of by the program.

If you are interested in hosting, we would love the opportunity to speak to you. Please contact Director Lorena Martinez at lorena.martinez@smes.org or Claire Frahm at claire.frahm@smes.org with any questions or concerns.
