Thursday, April 25, 8:15 a.m. Location: Tartan Center

Please join us for the monthly Parent Teacher Fellowship Membership Mixer, which will be held on April 25 in the Tartan Center at 8:15 a.m. Join us for a morning of exciting talk and fellowship as we listen to Upper School Assistant Principal Ryan Dahlem recount his adventure of climbing Mt. Everest and the life lessons of grit, character and perseverance.

Lessons from Everest: The Power of Grit
What does it feel like to stand on top of the world? Mr. Dahlem’s story is a compelling narrative that illustrates the power of character qualities often referred to as “grit” (persistence, self-control, curiosity, conscientiousness, self-confidence and optimism). These non-cognitive skills gained national attention in Paul Tough’s book How Children Succeed and are cultivated in St. Margaret’s students as crucial attributes that lead to success in education and in life.

Mr. Dahlem also reinforces the strength drawn from deep family bonds through the relationship with his father and climbing partner, retired high school Principal Dr. John Dahlem. The Dahlems climbed together around the world in pursuit of the fabled “Seven Summits,” the highest mountains on each of the seven continents. Their ten-year journey took them to Alaska, Africa, Australia, Russia, Argentina, Antarctica and Nepal.

Mr. Dahlem’s inspirational presentation is relevant to all St. Margaret’s parents committed to raising children with grit and forging lifelong, character-driven family relationships.
