For the second year in a row, grade 8 student Karen Ahn took top honors at the St. Margaret’s Middle School Math Counts Competition on January 11. Seventh grader Sarah Ko was awarded second place and one of St. Margaret’s grade 7 exchange students, Peter Shen was awarded third place.

All Middle School students are given a qualifying Math Counts test within their math classes in November. The Middle School math department faculty then scores and ranks the tests, selecting the top four students in each grade level to compete. Twelve Middle School students participated in the school competition, which took place in the Hurlbut Theater.

Math Counts is a national enrichment, coaching and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement in every U.S. state. Sponsored by the Math Counts Program, St. Margaret’s school-level competition was the first round in the competition.

Math Counts heightens student interest in mathematics by making math achievement as challenging, exciting and prestigious as a school sport. Math Counts competitions are provided at four levels: school, chapter, state and national. The school competition is used in determining which students should represent their school at the chapter competition in February. From there, the top teams and top individuals progress to the state competition in March. The four top-scoring individuals and the top team coach progress to the Raytheon Math Counts National Competition in May in Orlando, Fla.

At each level the top students are also awarded various prizes, which may include scholarship prizes in upwards of $8,000, a trip to space camp, and a notebook computer.

The competition was coordinated by Stephanie Windes, Middle School Principal Jeannine Clarke, Math Department Chair Steven Sherman, and Middle School Math teachers Kellie Paul, Kathy Leedom, Jeremy Dailey and Lynda Haynes.

This was St. Margaret’s sixth annual school math competition. Congratulations to all participants; we wish our team luck in the next level of competition!
