The PTF Parent Up Education Series continues Friday, November 9 with acclaimed Stanford University psychologist, Dr. Carol Dweck. Dr. Dweck will discuss Mindsets: Helping Students Fulfill Their Potential.

Do students think of their intelligence as fixed or as something they can develop? Dr. Carol Dweck will show how students’ mindsets about their intelligence can strongly affect their motivation and learning. She will reveal how praising students’ intelligence can backfire to undermine learning and how teaching students a growth mindset can change their motivation to learn, as well as their grades.

“Dr. Carol Dweck will share research about how one’s mindset dictates success in life. She will explain the contrast between a fixed and growth mindset and share the results of decades of research. Highlighting our cultural fascination with excellence, she will debunk the myth that some people are just born with it. Every truly successful person, regardless of aptitude, has had to work toward success and persevere through failure. A true message of lifelong learning, Dr. Dweck proves that the focus on learning needs to be growth over time and a realization that setbacks are just part of the process,” said St. Margaret’s Academic Dean Dr. Jeneen Graham.

Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D., is a leading researcher in the field of motivation and is the Lewis and Virginia Eaton Professor of Psychology at Stanford University. Her research focuses on why students succeed and how to foster their success. More specifically, her work has demonstrated the role of mindsets in success and has shown how praise for intelligence can undermine students’ motivation and learning.

She has also held professorships at Columbia and Harvard Universities, has lectured to education, business, and sports groups all over the world, and has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences. She recently won the Distinguished Scientific Contribution award from the American Psychological Association, the highest award in Psychology.

Her work has been prominently featured in such publications as The New Yorker, Newsweek, Time, The New York Times and The London Times, with recent feature stories on her work in the San Francisco Chronicle and the Washington Post, and she has appeared on such shows as Today, Good Morning America, NPR’s Morning Edition, and 20/20. Her bestselling book Mindset (published by Random House) has been widely acclaimed and has been translated into 20 languages.
