Maddie Barkate Shares Her Vision on Going Green

Over the past two years sixth grade student Maddie Barkate has made her mark on St. Margaret’s in a substantial way: by reducing her carbon footprint and the footprint of her classmates. This came in the form of implementing a successful composting program during her fifth grade year, and demonstrating leadership and environmental stewardship on the Grades of Green Youth Advisory Board over the past two years. Grades of Green (www.gradesofgreen.org) is a nonprofit organization that was formed by parents in a public elementary school in Manhattan Beach to inspire students to become more active environmental citizens. Through Maddie’s connection we regularly use Grades of Green as a resource for our own campus strategies. We are proud to have Maddie serve as a liaison between St. Margaret’s and Grades of Green and applaud the momentum she has given us to become a more sustainable campus!
