Dear St. Margaret’s Episcopal School Community,

I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Jeneen D. Graham as Academic Dean at St. Margaret’s Episcopal School effective August 1, 2012. Dr. Graham brings a unique blend of professional and personal expertise and experience to this important position. She is closely connected with the University of California, Irvine through her doctoral work and current position as the Acting Director of the Center for Research on Cognition and Learning in UCI’s Department of Education. In addition, she has served for the past two years on our Board of Trustees where she has teamed with Dr. Regina McDuffie to co-chair the Board’s Academic Task Force. In this capacity she has developed strong relationships with our division principals and first-hand knowledge of our curriculum and academic initiatives. And finally, Jeneen and her husband, Andy, have been parents at St. Margaret’s for the past eight years.

Dr. Graham is a graduate of Dartmouth College where received her B.A. in Anthropology and Spanish. She has worked and studied at UCI since 2002 where she has been both a lecturer and researcher in the Department of Education. She recently received her Ed.D in Education Administration and Leadership from UCI with her dissertation focusing on Elements of Human Effectiveness: Intelligences, Abilities and Personality Traits that Predict Success and Fulfillment in Life. Prior to pursuing her graduate work, Jeneen served for three years as the Assistant Director of Admission at St. Andrew’s (Episcopal) School in Boca Raton, Florida where she also used her fluency in Spanish to develop community outreach programs in the larger school community.

Over the past eight years, we have made a concentrated effort to align our curriculum across the four divisions of the school and refine and develop best practices for teaching and learning at St. Margaret’s. We are deeply proud of the progress we have made and the work that has been accomplished, and we are eager to maintain the strong momentum that has been created by Dr. McDuffie, our principals, department chairs and faculty. As we look to next steps, Dr. Graham is ideally suited to assume this important responsibility. Her deep knowledge of the culture of St. Margaret’s, her familiarity and respect for the curricular/instructional work we have done, and her sophisticated and highly relevant training at one of the top educational research programs in the country uniquely positions her to keep us moving forward as we work to create the very best learning environment for our students.

Finally, the position of Academic Dean requires a very special blend of talent and perspective. The world of education has changed significantly in recent years and schools that either resist or refuse to learn from these changes do so at considerable risk. However, great schools are more than places with high test scores and data driven decisions. As our mission states, we are committed to nurturing both the hearts and the minds of our students, and those who assume major leadership positions at St. Margaret’s must be powerful models of this blend of intellect and compassion. Jeneen Graham is just that. A distinguished scholar, a loving wife and mother, a talented musician, and a cherished and valued friend of many, Jeneen is a detail-oriented person with a big picture perspective. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Jeneen Graham as our next Academic Dean.

Warm regards,

Marcus D. Hurlbut
