The Tartan boys’ golf team finished the season 7-1 in league play and as Co-Champions of the Academy League. Overall, the team’s record was 8-7, and its only league loss was to Sage Hill when the Tartans lost on the tie breaking sixth golfer’s score 45-48.

This was the team’s ninth title in 10 years of Academy League Golf. The Academy League Championship entitled the Tartans to bring six golfers: senior Ryan Tanaka; juniors David Freed and Raffi Saposhnik; and, sophomores Anthony Cecere, Will Morrison and Jake Tompkins to the League Prelims at San Clemente Municipal Golf Course.

Four Tartans made the cut of 87[+15] and advanced to the League Championship at El Niguel Country Club on Tuesday, May 1.

Standing on the first tee at the League Championship, most players thought the cool day with moisture on the greens and little wind might allow El Niguel Country Club to play easier than it normally would. This was probably the case as El Niguel, known for its fierce afternoon winds, allowed four players to shoot in the 70s for the first time in the 10 year history of the Academy League Championship.

Anthony Cecere took second with a 73+75. David Freed and Raffi Saposhnik also earned First Team All-League and senior Ryan Tanaka earned Second Team All-League. With Anthony’s second place finish, he earned a trip to the CIF-SS Individual Sectional at Skylinks Golf Course on Monday, May 14. The Individual Sectional will host the top 100 golfers from the South County from which the top 30 will advance to the CIF-SS Individual Competition.
