From the Nurse’s Office: Spring is Here and so is Allergy Season

3 April 2012 admin 3,281 views No Comment Email This Post Email This Post Print This Post Print This Post

Environmental allergies occur when trees and plants bloom and their pollens are carried to the nose, eyes or lungs.

The most common symptoms of allergies are:

• Clear runny nose

• Sneezing

• Red, watery eyes

• Itchy or sore throat

• Dark circles under eyes

• Persistent cough

If symptoms occur for longer than a couple of weeks, are accompanied with sinus headaches or a persistent cough, we recommend a physician’s evaluation.

Asthma sufferers are particularly susceptible to flare-ups during the spring allergy season. Chest tightness, wheezing, nighttime coughing and decreased exercise tolerance are all symptoms of allergy-induced asthma. During these months, a preventative inhaler is often recommended.

We wish you a healthy and enjoyable spring!

Nurse Carol and Nurse Patty
