jliOn February 22, eight students from St. Margaret’s Middle School participated in the UCI Mathcounts Regional Competition. The two teams of competitively spirited students included Ashley Kang, grade 7; Brian Lee, grade 8; Isaac Kamgar, grade 8; Sean Chang, grade 7; McKinley McQuaide, grade 6; Ben Wang, grade 7; Tamara Tsubota, grade 6; and Megan Phansalkar, grade 6.

Mathcounts is a nonprofit national math enrichment, coaching and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement in every U.S. state and territory. It is one of the most successful education partnerships involving volunteers, educators, industry sponsors and students in America.

As team coach and Middle School math teacher, I am very proud of our team. There were 131 participants in the competition, and our team was one of only three representing private schools. One of our teams had a perfect score on the team round competition, which was an especially impressive accomplishment for our team of eight students versus the larger teams from larger schools.

Congratulations to all who participated!
