On February 21, a team of St. Margaret’s students competed in the Orange County Chapter Competition of Mathcounts, held at the University of California, Irvine. Our team of three included David Freed, grade 8; Derek Hoare, grade 8; and Brian Lee, grade 7.
The team members qualified to represent St. Margaret’s during a competition held last December, and they prepared for Mathcounts during weekly math club meetings held at lunchtime.

There were 131 participants in the competition, but St. Margaret’s was one of only three private schools represented.

The St. Margaret’s team members showed their competitive spirit, and though they didn’t win the overall competition, they achieved a perfect score on the team round. This is an especially impressive accomplishment for our team of three members, because most other schools had teams of four.

During the competition sponsored by Mathcounts, a nonprofit national math program promoting middle school mathematics throughout the United States, there were competitions for individuals, there was a round of team competition, and there was a countdown round, in which two students at a time raced against a clock to correctly answer questions in 40 seconds or less. Teams worked together at their schools to prepare for this annual event and the opportunity to compete against their peers from other schools.

As team coach and Middle School math teacher, I am very proud of our team. Congratulations to all who participated!
